2012: Lists of Fury

2012 hey - what a fine collection of moments. Here are the ones I consider somewhat superior to the others. As usual - they needn't have been created this year - just experienced by me for the first time, for that be how I roll.

2012: Rock of Montages

What the Mayan's forgot to predict about 2012 was that it would be my most productive drawing year ever, and also the year I got serious about painting [Idiots]. Behold a behind the scenes look at how it all went down...

The Vinyl Frontier

As part of The Neptune Power Federation's crowd funding Project Hellfire I included a hand drawn LP cover as a reward for some of our more generous pledgers. It turns out I either have many rich friends or lots of people feel sorry for me, as I ended up having to churn out 20 of them. Some were done with markers, others with brush and ink. I kept stills and video of the process and when complete totally montaged the shit out of it. The music track is taken form the album itself which you can check out here...

The Chase Is Better Than The Sketch

This is the final in a series of giveaways to participants in The Neptune Power Federation's Project Hellfire. As my first dabble in the world of crowd sourcing it has been a suprisingly rad one. Thanks again pledgers.

Leaving no bone unturned.

More Krull inspired art here for another Bobby Joe Ebola & The Children McNuggits tour poster. The featured warrior is an alternative rendering of the marauding goat sexer I brought to life in the recent Bone Dagger music video. Work in progress images after the jump...

Killed by sketch.

As part of The Neptune Power Federation's forthcoming debut album festivities I've been giving away some art for Project Hellfire participants. This one is another Lemmy portait neatly synergised with our Boil The Oil music video. Work in progess stills after the jump!

Grand Final... OF ROCK!!

My band Musk are playing a gig after the NRL Grand Final on Sept 30. Here's a poster promoting this occurrence....

Rock and Roll is Viking.

Here's a gig poster I did for Bobby Joe Ebola and the Children Macnuggits, based on the premise that vikings are cool. Progress pics can be perused after the jump...

City babies attacked by bats.

Here's a gig poster I did for Ramonesy punkers and jolly good fellows Batfoot!

Keeping up with the Joneses.

A quicky here done for this week's Alien themed  Ozcomics drawing challenge. The original is a fave of mine and this was one of numerous scenes that made me piss my pants as a youngster.

Bang Thy Head.

The latest music video for my heavy mental band The Neptune Power Federation is a bold amalgam where Game of Thrones meets The Headbangers Ball.

Simon says smash shit up.

This is an animated music video I did for Melbourne southern psychedelic horror blues outfit Sheriff. It tells the story of a laboratory experiment turned misunderstood dictator, searching for love. Yes that old cliche again.

Dead and Loving It.

Ozcomics theme for this week is The Walking Dead. I dig the show, I love zombies and it's fair to say I loved doing this. Progress pics after the jump.

Get Your Spock Out!

Two penile related thread titles in one day - way to stay classy blog. Unfortunately I used up all my genius in thinking up this rad mashup idea which has an obscurity factor illustrated in the Venn diagram below...

I'm probably not the first person to morph Spock's famous Vulcan salute into throwing some horns but who before me has cleverly reworded their motto with the lyrics of Ronnie James Dio? Nobody that's who. Work in progress pics after the jump!

Gary's got a Bone Dagger.

Here's a music video I did for U.S. comedy/folk/kitchen sink duo Bobby Joe Ebola and the Children MacNuggits. It was formulated after watching a bunch of Krull clips on Youtube.

No Supes for you!

The Ozcomics drawoff theme for this week is Superman, prompting me to create a homage to the classic number 17 issue where the man of steel puts Adolf Hitler in his place, Inglorious Basterds style.

I assume it's a classic, not having read it myself, however how could it not be with that simple arse kickingly elegant premise? Here's my entry followed by a few progress bits and pieces.

Groovy.

The most recent Ozcomics drawing challenge theme is The Evil Dead series which I was very happy with. Seeing these movies as a youngster were pivotal moments in my life and the realisation that horror could be funny set me down a path of whacky monster/zombie/alien creation that continues to this day. Thanks Bruce and Sam. Here's my entry followed by some work in progress stills after the bump. You can also buy a print or laptop skin at my Society6 page...

Internet Spawn

This week's Ozcomics draw off challenge is Spawn. I'm not too down with the mythology but I do own a few Spawn comics, which were bought after being blown away by Todd McFarlane's mad drawing skills. He directly inspired me to fumble around with digital colouring in Photoshop and try to become 15% as good as him.

The results are in...

I shot the Sheriff.

I have been in animated music video overdrive of late, with a number of projects nearing completion. Here's a few stills from something I'm working on for Melbourne band Sheriff who I came into contact with when they wanted to do a show with my band The Neptune Power Federation. How could they not be great fellows?! It is a ripping song with lyrics that evoke elements of Frankenstein, Soviet war propaganda and a heart wrenching love story.

Tanks for the memories.

Another Ozcomics draw off challenge, this time featuring perhaps my favourite comic book hero of all time, Tank Girl. Jamie Hewlett is so boss.

The only way is up.

It's a new Frenzal Rhomb tshirt design! Joining this notorious cast of tastefully conceived garments comes a new number cashing in on the popularity of One Direction whatever the hell that is. I'm pretty sure my concept of what boy bands wear is somewhat outdated but if you think I'm going to do research and watch a One Direction video when I already vaguely remember what New Kids On The Block looked like you are sadly mistaken. Anyway, it has funny vomit it in which is all Frenzal care about.

Quilt for speed.

This week's Ozcomics challenge was little known crime fighter Batman. I thought he needed a more recognisable star to help sell the piece, so he was paired with the infamous household name Crazy Quilt.

My son, Batman fan and aspiring comic book artist Jed also submitted a drawing which has since obliterated mine for likes in the Facebook based contest. I have thrown his pencils in the bin and grounded him for 30 years. Seriously though, this is pretty killer...

I'm an oil man...

The Dukes of Buzzard - My first foray into the world of oil painting is done. It's a bit rough and not as awesome as I imagined in my head but ok as a first attempt. At least "it aint no oil painting" is a criticism that can't be levelled at it. Oil paints do rule by the way, and I intend to get better at using them. Check out the step by step progress pics after the jump...

Is that a Gamorrean battle truncheon in your pocket...

Another Ozcomics drawing challenge, this time requiring the creation of Star Wars comic book cover. The nerd bait proved suitably attractive and I went for it.

It's Alive.

Frankenstein themed Ozcomics weekly draw off challenge. I must have drawn variations of this scene a zillion times. I have dug one out of the archives from 1998 below...

Holidays out of the sun.

I have just returned from a very relaxing holiday that included pursuits such as swimming, tennis and general healthy outdoor living. Of course as a dedicated indoorsman I still found time to include a Community DVD marathon and a bit of face time with my newly acquired iPad. Specifically seeing if it could operate as a decent drawing tablet with the help of an AluPen I picked up cheaply off the ebays and an app called Sketch Club. My choice to use Sketch Club was pretty arbitrary as there are a lot of decent looking drawing apps out there but it was cheap [$3 on the US iTunes store], has a nice range of brushes and most impressively includes layers with blend modes, photoshop style. It also has a cool feature that allows you to create a time lapse video of your illustration being created [I love watching other artists do these] and quite a thriving online community that you can upload and display your art with fellow digital scribblers.

Once you go Bat you'll never go back.

This week's Ozcomics challenge theme is Comic book romance. I've gone a little outside the box here [not as outside as my original homoerotic Batman and Robin concept] and honed in on Adam West's mighty 60s tv batman as opposed to the comic book version. Specifically the game changing moment when Bat was charmed by a groovy chick onto the dance floor where he lit rip with some almighty dance moves. Let us revisit this...

I hope Christopher Nolan somehow works this scene into The Dark Night Rises. I'm sure Christian Bale would be up for it - he seems to enjoy a laugh.

Anyway, here is my pictorial tribute to this great moment in Batman lore.

Metal Elf.

Here's an illustration created for no better reason than to imagine an Elf listening to Elf's self titled album whilst making use of the hallucinogenic qualities of Elfland's bountiful supply of magic mushrooms.

Crazy like a bat.

Each week Ozcomics has a cool super hero themed draw off - If there is a better use of my time I'd like to hear about it. My first entry is for this week's theme of Batgirl...
